Muslims believe that the Quran was revealed orally by God to the last prophet, Muhammad, through the archangel Gabriel (Jibril), [16] [17] continuously for 23 years, from the month of Ramadan, [18] when Muhammad was 40 years old; and ending in 632, the year of his death. [11] [19] [20] Muslims consider the Quran to be the most important miracle of Muhammad; evidence of his prophecy; [21] and the climax of a series of divine messages beginning with the one revealed to Adam, including the Tawrah (Torah), the Psalms (Psalms) and the Injil (Gospel). The word Quran occurs about 70 times in the text itself, and some words and phrases are said to refer to the Quran. [22]
The Quran is considered by Muslims to be not only divinely inspired but the actual word of God. [23] Muhammad did not write it as he did not know how to write it. Traditionally, several of Muhammad's friends worked as scribes, recording revelations. [24] Shortly after the death of the Prophet, the Quran was compiled by friends, who wrote down or memorized portions of it. [25] Caliph Uthman invented a common type, now known as the Uthmanic codex, commonly known as the Quran archetype known today. There are, however, various readings, with little difference in meaning. The Quran begins to unfold in its major narratives in biblical and apocryphal texts. A person who memorizes the entire Quran is called a hafiz (memorizer). The ayah (Quranic verse) is sometimes recited in a special kind of elocution reserved for this purpose, called tajwid. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims usually complete the recitation of the entire Quran during tarawih prayers. To explain the meaning of a particular verse in the Quran, Muslims rely on exegesis or tafsir (analysis) rather than a literal translation of the text.
